I am not a thing of time or circumstance. I am consciousness, pure and eternal, birth-less, deathless, changeless, ageless and timeless.

Qi Gong: Slim Down by Standing Still

In Traditional Chinese Medicine Distant Healing is practiced in a form of Qi Gong (pronounced chee-gong), which is the science of working with Qi/Chi, the living life force energy within the body. Qi Gong is a Chinese word translated as "Qi work" or energy work. Qi Gong is an ancient form of self-healing and distant healing practiced for centuries in China.

Though originally rooted to the martial arts, Qi Gong is energy medicine with techniques used for energy healing, meditation, self practice and distant healing. In self practice, movement is a completely relaxed form and the use of muscles is reduced to a minimum. It can, therefore, be practiced by people of all ages and generally achieves a high level of body relaxation, calmness, and peace of mind. The slow movement also promotes better balance, frees joints to enhance range of motion, and as movement can be utilized to exert pressure on the bones, their density increases proportionately.

Qi  is the fundamental life force that permeates all things. Qi connects and animates everything in the universe. When the flow of Qi is in balance and harmony we have perfect health. When the flow of Qi is impaired we have dis-ease; Qi Gong is an ancient energy medicine and alternative energy healing system that has been used for centuries to help with many health conditions. Qi Gong is the art and science of Qi. Using Qi or energy in distant healing, in breathing, in body movements, mind and meditation to cleanse, balance, strengthen and circulate Qi – the vital life energy and Blood.

Slowly bring both your arms upward and forward to form an open circle in front of your chest at about shoulder level. Your open palms face your chest. (The distance between the fingertips of your hands is 6-9 inches. The tops of your thumbs are no higher than your shoulders. Your wrists are as wide apart as your shoulders. Your elbows are sightly lower than your wrists and shoulders. The inner angle between your upper arm and forearm is slightly more than 90 degrees.) Imagine that you are holding (resting on) a large inflated balloon between your hands, forearms, and chest. Your armpits and upper arms rest on two small balloons. Your thighs gently hold one balloon in place. A huge balloon takes you weight behind you, like a beach ball on the sand. The weight on your feet remains slightly forward.

Lifting The Sky – perhaps one of the most well known, and most practiced Qigong exercises in the world. From student to Qigong Master this exercise has so much to offer.
Q3: I’m enjoying progressing with my practice. I have two questions relating to my practice of tai chi chuan. If I practice a pattern like grasping the sparrows tail using the PERFECT method, can I get good results with it? Or would it be better to practice an exercise like lifting the sky?
A3: Taijiquan practiced correctly is Qigong. In that it is a composite of form, energy and mind. So practicing Grasping Sparrows Tail using PERFECT will be of great benefit to your health and wellbeing.
It doesn’t matter whether you practice Lifting the sky or another pattern. The form is the form. Qigong is a composite of form, energy and mind, with mind being the least important part. Many people practice Qigong form and Taiji form, and they get the benefits of form. I.e. gentle external exericse, a gentle stretch, increased blood flow. But they do not get the benefits of Qigong. i.e. overcoming so called ‘incurable diseases’, increased vitality, developing internal force, mental and spiritual cultivation.
Q4: I had a teacher of tai chi chuan once tell me that tai chi chuan was basically a martial art. In his opinion, if tai chi chuan is chi kung, then it’s not very good chi kung, or at least not relative to dedicated chi kung exercises like the 8 piece brocade, small universe, training of stances, etc. I am interested in your opinion on this issue.
A4: I agree with your Taijiquan teacher. Taijiquan is/was a most incredible martial art. But today it is mostly practiced as Taiji dance. I.e. there is little to no emphasis or practice of combat application.
My personal belief is that to gain the benefits of the past Taijiquan masters, you have to practice Taijiquan as a martial art and not a dance. That just seems like common sense to me.
So if you want the benefits of Qigong, practice Qigong. Qigong can give you all the benefits of Taijiquan and Kung Fu, minus one –> combat efficiency. Because contrary to what is written in many places on the web. Qigong is not a martial art. It can be of benefit to martial artists, especially for developing internal force, but it is not a martial art.
Q5:To make the most efficient progress, is it best to practice patterns that were meant to be chi kung, like the 18 lohan hands? Or is tai chi chuan a reasonable practice if somebody enjoys it?
A5: Personally I would recommend practicing Qigong to make the most efficient progress.

Flatten Your Middle

When you slouch, you tilt your pelvis forward, pooching out the tummy and giving the appearance of a thicker midsection. These isometric exercises will help you learn how to strengthen your abdominal and gluteal muscles, says Cedric X. Bryant, Ph.D., chief science officer for theAmerican Council on Exercise. "They act like guide wires to keep you from pressing your pelvis forward and arching your back," he adds.
Glute Squeeze: Firmly contract your glutes and thighs while standing upright and still. Hold for 10 seconds (remember to breathe!), then relax. Repeat 10 times.
Ab Brace: While standing motionless, tighten your abdominal muscles as if you were anticipating a punch to the stomach. Hold for 10 seconds, then relax. Do ten of these. They'll smoothe out the appearance of a potbelly while toning and strengthening the abs, Bryant says.
